IT'S tournament time next week with the 52nd Southampton Open taking place from Monday to the finals on Saturday.

Defending champion Michael Squires (Boscombe Cliff) will try to retain the singles crown while the Barrett brothers from Eastleigh Rail are out to win back-to-back pairs titles.

Kestrel Guards, whose managing director is keen bowler Keith Matthews, are sponsoring the tournament for a second year. Play takes place at greens throughout the area before the finals are staged at Atherley.

Southampton Old Green bowler Terry Whitear is two rounds away from qualifying for the national stages of the over-55 singles championship at Bromley. His latest success was 21-19 against Barry Croad (Cowes Medina) at Plessey, Isle of Wight.

Dave Archibald and Dave Edmonds of Atherley continued their excellent progress in the London and Southern Counties pairs championship when scoring a 24-16 victory away to Eltham, Kent.
