TEAM Solent's women penned a new entry into the club record books at the weekend's British Athletics League Golden Jubilee Cup semi-final at Barnet Copthall.

The all-conquering speed quartet of Emma Duck, Ruth Brereton, Sian Scott and Melanie Purkiss led the way in both relays, winning the 4x100m sprint in 47 seconds dead and the 4x400m in a new club best of 3.46.6.

Scott, a recent signing from Bournemouth AC, also set a season's best 59.6 seconds in winning her specialist 400m hurdles event.

On last year's form, the 20-year-old Todd Bennett-coached athlete would have featured high in this summer's UK rankings with a best of 58.36 seconds.

But Scott - twice the AAA junior champion - had a long spell out with a stress fracture and is just feeling her way back to form, having taken bronze at the recent AAA Championships/Olympic Trials in Manchester.

Coach Bennett said: "Sian's only been back in training for about six weeks, but fortunately there are no major championships in her age-group (under-23s) this year, so if ever there was a good time to have a break, it's now.

"After being injured, it was too big a jump to expect her to make the Olympic team. It's just a case of her getting back and having races now. Anything she does this year is a bonus."

Pole vaulter Clare Ridgley was an easy Solent winner with a 3.40-metre clearance, Purkiss breezed the 400m in 54 seconds dead, while the hard-working Vicki Foster came up trumps again in the throws, winning the discus and taking third in the shot.

Spurred on by the women's heroics, Solent finished a creditable third in the match and could have overhauled Thames Valley for runners-up spot but for a couple of late withdrawals.

The men did not have the same measure of success as the women - high jumper Dan Turner their only winner. Owain Jones (5,000m), Iain Robertson (3,000m steeplechase) and the 4x100m relay team all came second, but the most promising performance came from 18-year-old John Beattie, who lopped more than 40 seconds off his 10,000m personal best, finishing third in 33.31.5.
