ORGANISERS of a popular New Forest event are praying rain will not stop play for the second year in a row.

Committee members for the New Forest Steam and Craft Show are desperate to recoup the losses of £20,000 caused by bad weather last year.

Driving rain kept crowds away from the event which is dedicated to vintage steam-powered vehicles.

Secretary Tony Greenham said this weekend's show would not have happened without the dedication of hundreds of volunteers.

Groups such as Millbrook Rugby Club and New Forest Scouts have traditionally helped run the event in return for donations. Even though last year's losses forced them to walk away empty handed they came back to ensure the show carried on.

Mr Greenham said: "If it wasn't for the support of the volunteers the show would have folded."

Aside from the parade of steam-powered and vintage vehicles, main attractions this year will be a performance by the Silver Star Parachute Team and a sheepdog display by Elaine Hill.

The Excelsior Jazz Band, the Ringwood Pipe Band, the Winton Steel Band and the Plonkers will provide music for the event.

Punch and Judy will be on hand to entertain youngsters along with face-painting stands, Clifford the Big Red Dog and a falconry display.

A 70-stall craft fair, camping and caravan space, licensed bars, free car parking and a creche baby change will also be available.

Admission to the event from 9am this Friday until Sunday evening at Meadow Mead Farm, Netley Marsh is £8 for adults, £5 for children aged six to 16, £5 for senior citizens and £20 for a two-and-two family ticket.
