WALKIES! On Saturday, July 10, I had the great pleasure of going on Cliddesden's Wine Walk and enjoyed excellent company and terrific food, including a slice of Gordon Snook's 80th birthday cake.
They linger longer at hosts' houses in Cliddesden, mainly because - unlike Ellisfield - they haven't so far to walk.
We cover as much as five miles!
LADY in grey: For two weeks I've been recounting the story of how many years ago Theresa Lunn glimpsed sight of a lady in grey sitting on a stool and weeding the garden behind the old Apple Store in Church Lane.
Yet when Theresa turned back to look a second time, the woman had vanished.
Celia tells me it was many years before they discovered who the vision was, having read Marian Sims-Williams' A History of Ellisfield.
The answer is revealed on the last few pages about Ellisfield Manor, the grand house which once stood on the site now occupied by the cluster of houses at the top of College Lane.
Major Harry Hoare, of Hoares Bank in London, and his wife, Lady Geraldine, daughter of Lord August Hervey, lived there.
To quote the book: "They gave all the time they could spare to the gardens ... wearing very old clothes when doing this. ... A magnificent herbaceous border was made, which was Lady Geraldine's special interest and it was her job to keep it weeded. She did this sitting on a stool."
