STUDENTS flocking to the Varsity in Southampton city centre have helped pump up the profits at pub and bar group Barracuda.

The company says it is on target for record annual profits after a strong first half to the year.

Buckinghamshire based Barracuda, which owns the Varsity, Smith & Jones and Barracuda bar chains, says gross profits rose 16 per cent to £32.5m on a 15 per cent increase in turnover to £46.3m.

The privately-owned group is backed by the Prudential's private equity arm PPM Ventures, with Varsity being one of the top two student brands across the UK.

Southampton's Varsity is a popular watering hole with undergraduates from both the city's university and institute.
