A NEW skatepark is to open in Portchester this week despite a spate of vandalism which threatened to put its opening back.

The park, which will be officially opened on Thursday, includes a meeting point, a multi-use games area for football and basketball, as well as a number of skate ramps.

Earlier this month it was strewn with litter as vandals attacked Wicor Recreation Ground in Cranleigh Road.

Thousands of pounds of damage was caused to the neighbouring cricket pavilion as yobs wrecked the changing rooms and spread human excrement across the walls.

Civic chiefs, who were supported by police throughout the project, are delighted the skatepark is back on track.

Fareham's executive member for leisure, Cllr Connie Hockley, said: "We are dedicated to providing high-quality leisure facilities around the borough and are delighted to offer the young people of Portchester this excellent new facility.

They will be able to spend their free time playing sports or simply relaxing with friends."

Skateparks are also due to open in Stubbington, Park Gate, Whiteley and Locks Heath later this year.
