Girlfriends - Portchester Players' Community Centre, Portchester.
THIS musical drama is about the role of the WAAFs in the Second World War.
A sub plot concerns a love story played out against the uncertain background of war.
The scene is set by a long opening number that includes all ten of the WAAFs describing some of their motives for joining the organisation.
The ensemble numbers, of which there are many, were very well executed, with tuneful singing and choreography that suited the mood.
All the cast featured in solo pieces.
Particularly notable were Jacqueline Arnott (Jasmine) in a tragi-comic role and newcomer Joanne Newbrook (Woods).
The two male roles were effectively portrayed by Steve Arnott (Guy) and Nigel Hocking (Gareth).
A clever set helped minimise the effect of the production's 23 scene changes.
The lighting was good. Praise to for the accompanist on the piano, Mike Balston.
Director Kay Sumpner has successfully brought the musical to a wider public.
