PAST British Best All Rounder champion Ian Cammish (Sonic Cycles) has given his seal of approval to the Petersfield Bypass course.
Cammish marked one of his rare appearances on southern roads with a sparkling time of 1hr 45min 34sec in the Wessex Veterans 50-mile championship.
On a morning when poor visibility following overnight rain threatened to prevent the race from starting, the start was delayed by 30 minutes for conditions to improve.
As well as finishing fastest by just over a minute to end the winning sequence of Ben Instone (A3CRG) on the course, Cammish also took the award as best on standard in the 50/60 age band.
But Cammish couldn't match the excellent performance of defending Wessex champion, John Woodburn (Maidenhead CC).
Like Cammish a former national champion many times, 67-year-old Woodburn raced round in 1.53.28 to beat his age standard by over a minute per mile, recording an advance of 54.2.
While these two past masters of time trialing took the individual honours, Sotonia CC won both team prizes thanks to their superior numbers. With individual times of 1.57.45, 2.3.6 and 2.10.9, Stuart Martingale, Richard Burch and Martin Ward formed the fastest trio, and Ward also shared the prize for best team on standard, with Norman Harvey and Mary Corbett, to overcome the loss of Alan Sharpen, who was unlucky to puncture.
RESULT:
Wessex VTTA 50, Rake: 1 I Cammish (Sonic Cycles) 1-45-34, 2 B Instone (A3CRG) 1-46-41, 3 N Bowdler (Farnborough & Camberley CC) 1-50-19. Best on standard winners: J Woodburn (Maidenhead CC) +54m 2s, I Cammish + 47m 41s & M Ward (Sotonia CC) + 23m.6s.
