TWO LOCAL anglers starred in the five-strong England team which scooped the gold team medal during the Home International Shore Champions.

England youth team member Daniel Mogridge from Fareham took the step up to senior level in his stride after a slow start on day one of the event, at Samphire Hoe near Dover.

He bounced back to win his section on day two.

Malcolm Stote from Lymington, fishing his first international event, won his section on both days in a fine performance.

After the first day, the England squad were second, four points behind Wales, but they put in a brilliant last-day performance to win all five sections and knock Wales into second position, followed by Scotland and then Ireland.

The England junior team also fared pretty well, winning the junior section with 27 points closely followed by Ireland with 26, Wales with 24 and Scotland with 22.

A good variety of species were recorded during the latest round of the Gale Force League, with Malcolm Stote from Lymington winning B section with a 17lb 4oz bag of doggies, pouting, smoothhound and poor cod to nudge out Lee Cullen from Netley (11lb 12oz) and Pete Hegg (11lb 11.50oz).

Dave Lane was top performer in A section with 21lb 2.50oz, followed by John Van Crugten with 19lb 14.5oz and Ben Stockley with 19lb 2oz. The next round in the pegged open series will be held along the Ferry Bridge section of Chesil on July 23.

Dogfish, pouting, smoothhound and scad are expected to supply the action.

Pete Hegg will have details (01305 822833).

Local anglers are reminded to make sure that they dispose of litter responsibly after a fishing session. There has been a particular problem along the deep water section at Magazine Lane.

One suggestion is for local clubs to get together and do a litter sweep on various beaches several times a year. It would send out a clear message to anglers and local residents.

Fish were conspicuous by their absence during the Swanage Hospital Open organised by the Swanage club.

Heaviest fish won, Will Chellingworth taking the boat section with a 1lb 1oz wrasse, followed by John Standford with a 1lb wrasse.

Action was far from good in the beach section, Keith Woods winning with a mackerel taken from the pier.

A wide variety of species were landed during the Dennings Tackle Open along the Ferry Bridge section of Chesil Beach, including bass, smoothhound up to 8lb, black bream, red and tub gurnard, scad, pouting, poor cod, spotted rays, undulate rays to 16lb 3oz, silver eels and bull huss up to 7lb 7oz.

Rob Marshall won with a superb undulate ray from the shore which tipped the scales down to 16lb 3oz, along with a few dogfish and pouting together totalling 25lb 4oz. He collected nearly £800 in cash and prizes, which included the £300 top prize along with a top-of-the-range Daiwa rod and reel.
