SHANE Warne equalled the world record for Test wickets today when he drew level with Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralith-aran's mark of 527.
The Hampshire captain had Upul Chandana stumped by Adam Gilchrist for 14 as Sri Lanka slumped to 174-8 in the second Test in Cairns.
It was Warne's seventh wicket of the match - his 112th Test - but he was unable to surpass Murali-tharan, who missed the two-test series in Australia for personal reasons.
Sri Lanka eventually closed on 181-8, leaving Warne to wait for another chance in the next Test series to break the record outright.
That is against India in September but Sri Lanka are at home to South Africa starting next month, so the battle between the two spinning greats is set to rumble on for a while yet.
Warne had 520 wickets going into the second Test, then took 3-129 in Sri Lanka's first innings and 4-70 in the second.
Sri Lanka had set been 355 to win by Australia from 85 overs on the fifth day.
