Chris Tremlett has set his sights on a swift return to his early season form to guarantee his place in England's final ICC Champions Trophy squad.

Fast bowler Tremlett was yesterday named in England's 30-man provisional squad for the one-day tournament, which will be played at Edgbaston (v Zimbabwe), the Rose Bowl (v Sri Lanka) and Lord's from September 10-25.

But that squad will be trimmed to 14 on August 10 and Tremlett, who has taken 14 National League wickets at 16.64 and 31 championship wickets at 22.25 this year, is determined to do all he can to make the final cut.

The 23-year-old, who was told of his inclusion soon after hitting a six to beat Sussex in the Twenty20 Cup, said: "It was a pleasant surprise. I didn't know they were announcing the 30 until I got a text message from David Graveney on Friday night. I checked my messages on the coach after we'd beaten Sussex and was really happy to get it.

"If I play well hopefully I'll make the final 14. They're obviously looking at a few other players but the fact they've put my name down as well is obviously nice. I started the season really well but have been a bit disappointed with my form in the last three to four weeks, particularly with the way I've been bowling in the Twenty20.

"I've been working on a few things, like my run up, and hopefully I'll come back with all guns blazing in the second half of the season."

Former England Academy man Tremlett sympathised with Dimitri Mascarenhas, who was once again overlooked by the selectors despite being in the predicted squads of many pundits.

"I don't know whet he's got to do to get in," added Tremlett.

Hampshire manager Paul Terry had mixed feelings following the announcement of the squad. He said: "I'm delighted for one and disappointed for the other. Chris is steadily improving as a cricketer and will get better and better but Dimi keeps improving as well and I'm surprised he's been left out of a squad of 30.

"I can't believe there are 30 better one-day cricketers but sometimes the hardest part is trying to convince people, he just has to keep doing what he has been doing."

Chairman of selectors David Graveney surely had Mascarenhas in mind when he said: "Choosing 30 players is a far harder task than picking 14 and I would stress that this is by no means a definitive or exhaustive list.

"A number of seam bowling options were considered and those who are not on the list should not be unduly disheartened about their international prospects."

But that will be scant consolation to Mascarenhas.

Graveney added: "Our ultimate goal as selectors is to build a side for the World Cup in 2007 and the make-up of this squad gives a good indication as to the type of team we are looking to develop and the particular roles we are looking to fill within it. "We will continue to experiment with new players as we seek the right blend between experience and youth ahead of 2007.

"As we look ahead to the composition of the winter tour parties, we will continue to closely monitor individual performances in all the domestic one-day competitions and canvass opinion within the game from coaches and captains about the merits of individual players."
