WINCHESTER'S Anna Newton led the gold rush for Hampshire at the English Schools' Track & Field Championships in Gateshead.

The Henry Beaufort schoolgirl was one of the first Hampshire athletes in action on Friday and set the standards with a 1.61m win in the junior girls' high jump - just two centimetres short of her pb.

Newton was one of five Hampshire gold stars - a vast improvement on 2003 when the county failed to notch any.

Two Lord Wandsworth College students also won - Marimba Odundo-Mendez in the senior boys' 200m and Laurence Cox in the inter boys' 1500m.

Ringwood's Susie Hignett led from gun to tape to win the senior girls' 1500m, while Jamie Broadey from Courtmoor School lived up to his promise to head the junior boys' javelin.

Exciting 400m prospect Louis Sellers from Winton School in Andover was runner-up in the intermediate boys' final and there was silver for Testbourne's Holly Croxford in the junior girls' 200m.
