Half a Sixpence, Southampton Operatic Society Juniors, Itchen College, Southampton
This happiest of musicals is a showcase of musical treats from beginning to end.
Joseph Wright is a dynamo as Kipps, giving a performance that bursts with energy and humour. Kayleigh Pearson, as his sweetheart Ann, brings a down-to-earth quality to her part, captivating everyone with her outstanding singing voice.
Kipps, a draper's apprentice, inherits a legacy. He gives up his job, abandons Ann, and becomes engaged to upper-class Helen. He realises in time that he does not fit into this social sphere.
There are delightful comic performances from Chris Morgan as Chitterlow, and Amy Bushell, Guy Passey and Rhiannon Cox as the upper-crust Walsinghams.
The sequences with the shop girls and drapers are sheer delight.
Congratulations go to the director for this warm-hearted entertainment.
