And Then I Opened the Window, Eastleigh Borough Youth theatre, The Point, Eastleigh
DIRECTOR Daniel Clarke makes his Eastleigh debut with this sharply written and thought-provoking play.
It is described as a "montage" on the theme of "escape", with the members of the theatre creating scenes based on their own youthful experiences.
Subjects include bullying, moving house, love, examination stress, embarrassment, wishes and dreams.
There is a forceful depiction of the "must not do", which questions the negative and often confusing aspects of adult control.
Matt Baker, as a disfigured character, gives a moving portrayal of alienation.
Hospitalised early in life, he is released into an outside world that does not know how to respond to him.
There is balance at the end when positive memories of loved ones, successes and friendships are recalled.
This is a well performed ensemble piece, with every cast member having a part and helping to create the choreography, set and music.
Nevertheless, a challenging evening for parents. Last performance tonight.
