Winchester heritage campaigners are raising the profile of their battle to preserve a unique railway viaduct near the city.

The Hockley Viaduct, built in the late 19th century, is believed to be one of the first constructed with a concrete core.

The Friends of Hockley Viaduct is making a second attempt to have the structure listed by the government. If successful, that would release substantial grants to repair the viaduct which runs parallel with the M3 near Twyford Down. A bid several years ago was rejected.

On August 12 the City of Winchester Trust has organised a walk along the viaduct, led by Kevin Robertson, a local railway author. It starts at 6.30pm.

A leading campaigner, Chris Webb of Southgate Street, said the new application for listed status had been completed.

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport will consult English Heritage and then make a decision.
