Winchester'S historic City Mill will be celebrating the anniversary of its independence this summer - 450 years after it was given away by the Crown.

Queen Mary gave the long-standing mill, pictured above, to the City of Winchester in 1554, to compensate for the costs of her marriage to Philip of Spain.

The National Trust now owns and protects the ancient building, which is positioned over the River Itchen. It will celebrate the remarkable anniversary in style with a nine-day Tudor festival beginning on July 24.

The National Trust team will wear Tudor costumes throughout the festival, which starts with Tudor food tasting and music during a packed weekend of entertainment.

The celebration will reach an exciting finale on the weekend of July 31, when historic re-enactment group, the Hungerford Household will provide a contemporary account of Mary Tudor's wedding, as enjoyed by a group of 16th-century Winchester merchants.
