She by Charles Aznavour blared from radios countrywide and Lego was the must- have toy for every budding architect.

A pint of beer was just 25p, West Germany and Franz Beckenbauer were on the verge of lifting the World Cup in their home country and we were introduced to the culinary ease of Angel Delight.

But 30 years ago also saw the introduction of something even more revolutionary, which moulds everyday life in Hampshire in 2004 - out-of- town shopping.

In 1974, French firm Carrefour threw open its doors to the south's first ever out-of-town shopping hypermarket in Chandler's Ford.

Three decades later, Asda is in charge of the superstore, but now Asda wants to know - are you in this picture?

The store was opened on July 17 1974 and Asda, who took over the supermarket in 1991, is planning a 30-year celebration on July 19. The supermarket is keen to hear from people who were first over the threshold on the day it opened.

Billed as the great shopping bag revolution, the advent of a 50,000 sq ft sales area at the much-publicised development was being watched closely for its impact on traditional shopping centres by many, including the Department of the Environment.

With a huge Tesco going up just a few miles away in Eastleigh town centre at the same time, the scene was set for a battle of the giants in a classic cut price war.

But now events coordinator Lesley Mead wants to get the first few customers to ever grace the store back in again. She said: "I want to trace someone who stepped through the doors on the very first day it was open, but would particularly like to find the first customer."

The idea is to get shoppers who were there on day one to take part in the 30-year celebration by doing something like a ribbon cutting ceremony, although plans are still being formulated. A staff party is planned, which will hold many memories for some of the workers who have 30 years' service at the store.

The hypermarket ran under the Carrefour banner until 1989 when it became a Gateway store before being taken over by Asda.

Anyone who would like to take part in the celebrations should contact Lesley Mead on 023 8026 8341.
