MORE than 5,000 are set to take part in a record breaking mile event in Southampton this Saturday.

Runners will be put under starter's orders at 1pm before pacing down The Avenue, one of 14 venues nationwide chosen for Sport Relief Saturday.

Sporty Big Brother winner Kate Lawler will be alongside Southampton born Radio One DJ Scott Mills on the starting line.

Every day this week Scott and Radio One breakfast show presenter Chris Moyles, who is running the race in his hometown of Leeds, have been battling to find out who is the most popular miler.

The DJs are involved in a mobile phone face off with listeners being asked to text in their favourite DJ with 70 pence from the £1 cost of the message going into the presenter's sponsorship pot.

Organisers are optimistic that Southampton's mile, which will coincide with hundreds of other miles across the country, for people to run, jog or walk, will be a huge success.

Vicky Taylor of Sport Relief said: "We have got about 5,000 registered already but we are expecting more to sign up on Saturday.

"As well as the race there will be plenty on Southampton Common too with lots of entertainment and demonstrations from sporting groups across the city."

Scott Mills, who currently hosts Radio One's afternoon show from 3pm until 6pm, will MC the day and direct all milers to their Fitness First warm up, the starting line and welcome them as they finish.

Other attractions include live drumming from Southampton's Dhol drummers and a demonstration from Wu Tan Martial Arts. Also, there will be large screens in place to show highlights of the Sport Relief campaign and footage from this year's sporting moments.

Money raised from Sport Relief will fund sporting projects in the UK and help to tackle poverty in some of the world's poorest countries.

If you want to run with Kate and Scott, visit the website www.sportrelief.com for availability of places or arrive there early on Saturday.
