Winchester police are appealing for witnesses after a woman claimed she was raped while on a night out in the city.

The 25-year-old woman alleged that she was raped in the ladies toilets in Abbey Gardens just before 11.30pm on Thursday July 1st.

DC Steve Deeprose, of Winchester CID, said: "The victim has told us that after the attack she sat in The Broadway crying. We believe a number of people walked past her and it is these people we are looking to trace.

"We are also keen to hear from anyone who was in the area between 11pm and 11.45pm who may be able to help us with our investigation."

DC Deeprose added that the woman was wearing a denim skirt, a black short-sleeved top and black tights and boots.

A 28-year-old man from Winchester was arrested and released without charge on police bail until Friday August 13th.
