SOME of Winchester's best known VIPs were arrested at the weekend - and only released once they had raised more than £150 for charity.

The jail-and-bail event was held to raise cash for the Pinder Centre that provides help to adults and children with mobility problems.

Special constables made arrests on people for everything from 'supporting Watford Football Club' to 'wearing offensive clothing'.

Winchester City Council leader Shelia Campbell was one of those arrested at The Guildhall, along with MP Mark Oaten, pictured above, who was nicked at the Buttercross in the High Street. The Pinder Centre relies solely on fundraising and cares for more than 100 patients every week.

Administrator Kim Carmichael said: "We are very grateful to the Hampshire Special Constabulary for all the hard work that they have put into this fundraising event.

"We rely so much on local fund-raising to help keep services here operational and every event is crucial."

Section officer for the Winchester Specials Beryl Hodgson said: "Events like these help us build up relationships with the local community and take part in local events.

"It is a great opportunity to assist local charities, and have some fun at the same time."
