Featuring six comedians over three evenings, Forest Arts presented a preview of the Avalon Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
"Stand-up" comics (and how else would they tell jokes - lying down?) like John Oliver and Andy Zaltzman who appeared on Friday, seem to find it necessary to present a supercilious arrogance to an audience who have paid to be entertained.
Should an intelligent audience not laugh at insipid and stereotypical material, delivered in an amateurish and sneering tone, Oliver and Zaltzman rely on insult and obscenity to raise a braying guffaw.
Under-rehearsed, reading notes, looking at watches, and lacking real comedic perception and panache, the duo finished a limp set with "what a shame that a member of the audience got the biggest laugh". Exactly!
And the man behind muttered, "I think they should get proper jobs!"
