TWENTY-THREE years on from her last top ten single, Hazel O'Connor is still on the road and delivering the goods.
The New Wave star, who leapt to stardom playing a hapless victim of the music industry in the film Breaking Glass before playing out the scenario as a real-life drama, makes a return visit to The Tower, Winchester this week - but this time with a full band set-up.
In contrast to previous, stripped-down visits, Hazel is joined this time by Coventry band The Subterraneans, who will be complementing the singer's husky, dramatic vocals with their soaring sax, guitars, bass and drums.
Not surprisingly, the set includes several Breaking Glass numbers as well as newer material.
Hazel, who scored three top ten hits between August 1980 and May 1981, is currently writing her autobiography in addition to gigging.
"There was definitely something going energetically at the end of the 70s and the start of the 80s," she says of her early days.
"It was a three-chord time, but those three chords in those simple songs were put to such great effect."
The Tower, Winchester, Thursday. Performance: 8pm.Tickets: from £8. Box office: 01962 867986.
