THE very model of a witty, wacky and wonderfully high-energy musical comes to Guildford's Yvonne Arnaud Theatre when the GSA Conservatoire students return to the stage with The Pirates of Penzance from July 9 to 17.
An acclaimed, updated version of Gilbert and Sullivan's classic comic opera, it combines the well-loved witty wordplay with contemporary versions of the score - leading to a Tony Award-winning version that took Broadway by storm in 1980.
The plot involves young Frederick, an apprentice with a band of soft-hearted pirates. He yearns for a life of respectability - and love - but things never work out that way!
Pirates, bungling policemen - on whom the Keystone Cops were based - some husband-hungry sisters and a Major General all combine into a zany and enchanting musical classic.
Some of Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular songs are featured, including I Am a Pirate King, A Policeman's Lot is Not a Happy One, Come Friends Who Plough the Sea, Poor Wandering One and I Am The Very Model.
The GSA Conservatoire graduates annually take to the stage at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, often prior to graduating and appearing in the West End. Recent shows have included Annie and Cabaret.
The production is directed by Olivier Award-winning actor and director Tim Flavin.
Tickets, priced from £11 to £19.50, with concessions available, can be purchased from the box office on 01483 440000.
