LENS have moved into pole position to land Liverpool's Vladimir Smicer if the Czech midfielder proves not to be a part of new boss Rafael Benitez's plans.
Smicer was signed from Lens for £4.2m by Gerard Houllier in 1999 and the French outfit have been in contact with his representatives over a possible return.
Only yesterday, Saints boss Paul Sturrock rubbished rumours of Smicer moving to St Mary's but it is still believed the player's preferred option would be to remain at Anfield and prove himself to Benitez.
Lens chairman Gervais Martel and coach Joel Muller are huge admirers of the 30-year-old and are eager for him to return.
Smicer is rated at only £1.5m as he only has 12 months remaining on his current contract.
