JASON LANEY gave his former Hampshire teammates a Twenty20 lesson as the Southern Electric Premier League pulled off a shock seven-wicket win.
South Wilts batsman Laney smashed 55 in an opening stand of 77 with fellow ex-Hampshire batsman Richard Scott as the SEPL XI reached the 107 needed for victory with 21 balls to spare at Bournemouth's Chapel Gate ground.
Laney, who was released at the end of the 2002 season, became a Hampshire enigma after failing to turn his undoubted talent into consistent runs during his seven years with the county.
But yesterday the 31-year-old plumber provided a reminder of what he was capable of as Hampshire's Twenty20 preparations suffered a setback.
Laney, who was given the afternoon off work so he could play yesterday, was eventually out in the 11th over, caught behind by Derek Kenway following some extra bounce from Lawrie Prittipaul.
But, by then, Hampshire were already on the verge of an ignominious defeat.
The damage was done soon after Shaun Udal had won the toss and elected to bat.
Excellent new ball bowling from BAT left armer Dan Goldstraw and Rob Hodgson, who was playing on his home ground, and two wickets apiece for Havant pair Richard Pineo and Richard Hindley, and Andover's Roger Miller, restricted Hampshire to an embarrassingly low 106-8.
In five Twenty20 group matches last year, Hampshire's lowest total was the 121 made in their last game, a fourth successive defeat against the Surrey Lions.
But, yesterday, an attack that included a Portsmouth Gram-mar school teacher and Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove's chauffeur threatened to restrict Paul Terry's side to less than 100.
Hampshire wickets fell consistently on a seam-friendly wicket.
Goldstraw caught Michael Clarke (4) off his own bowling with the third ball of the match after the young Australian mistimed an attempted pull.
Lawrie Prittipaul (7) gloved Goldstraw to first slip, John Crawley edged Pineo behind and then Dimi Mascarenhas (18) lost his middle stump in PE teacher Pineo's next over.
Greg Lamb, who was playing his first Twenty 20 match, was the only plus of the evening for Hampshire.
Lamb struck 30 from 31 balls before holing out to Laney at long on, having put on 30 for the seventh wicket with Udal after Kenway and James Hamblin had been trapped leg before with successive deliveries from all-rounder Miller.
Medium pacer Miller drives Bransgrove around the country when he is not playing for Andover and he reduced Hampshire to 74-5 in the 15th over after resuming his spell from the Airport End.
Off-spinner Hindley, who played for Hampshire against Glamorgan last year, produced a double whammy of his own in the last over of the innings, when he pinned Billy Taylor immediately after Lamb's exit.
The SEPL coasted to victory in reply and Bashley's Shawn Gillies, who plays club cricket for Perth side Melville with Mascarenhas, hit the game's only six - a straight hit in Udal's final over - before Portsmouth all-rounder Lee Savident drove Hamblin to the boundary for the winning runs.
