ASSOCIATED British Ports (ABP), owner and operator of Southampton docks, has scooped a top UK safety award for the eighth consecutive year.
The port, one of the largest and busiest in the country, had to pass a stringent test to satisfy the British Safety Council's awards panel that the docks had lower than average accident rates, sound safety policies and plans as well as a strong board-level commitment to health and safety.
The prestigious award was presented to Haif Brora, ABP Group security co-ordinator and head of safety for ABP Southampton, by David Ballard, director general of the British Safety Council.
Mr Ballard said: "The National Safety awards highlight organisations that reach the top levels of health and safety.
"They are a mark of proven and significant achievement in safety standards.''
The port of Southampton was chosen from a number of private and public sector enterprises all over the country.
Andrew Kent, ABP port director in Southampton, said: "Southampton is one of the busiest and most diverse cargo ports in the UK, for whom health and safety are of paramount importance.
"We are delighted to have won this award again this year and will continue to work at improving our health and safety standards and performance.''
