VETERAN cycling multi-champion Glenn Longland (Antelope RT) broke a two-year win drought with two victories last week.
He won the Heath Road Race and then on Sunday hit top form to win the East Dorset CA 50-mile time trial at Sturminster Marshall.
Beating Isle of Wight rider Dave Dent (SP Systems Wightlink) by 50 seconds, he agreed that the road race win during the week had inspired him to a second victory.
Dave Dent is the record holder for the 50-mile course but he is still recovering from the accident that broke his hip last November.
The injury made him cautious on corners and roundabouts on the damp roads and lost him several seconds. "There are a few screws in the hip, and it won't do any good if I fall on them," he joked.
Stuart Bowers (Hargroves Cycles) just missed winning the Thursday handicap circuit at Barnsfield Heath.
Organiser Pete Wilson split the field into two groups for a shortened course. Bowers, a frequent winner, was in the second group that had to make up a lap on ten laps.
The front group, working well together, held off the scratch group until the finishing straight. Bowers, jumping through the front group of 20 riders, got to within 20 lengths of the eventual winner, Paralympic hopeful Darren Kenny (Bournemouth Arrow CC). With a group of more than 40 riders coming over the line together, the organiser was only able to judge the first four riders.
There will be the usual circuit racing at Barnsfield Heath and Goodwood tomorrow evening, under BC rules, starting at 7pm.
The funeral of south Coast cycling legend Charlie Marriner will be at the East Chapel Crematorium on Thursday at 2.30pm. Charlie was champion of the old Portsmouth and Southampton NCU division.
