Jubilant Eastleigh team wins medal haul
EASTLEIGH won six medals at the Hampshire Youth Games, which were held last weekend at the Aldershot Military Stadium.
The 150 strong Eastleigh team beat off competition to win gold in the Girls Basketball (Year 8/9), Girls Netball and the mixed Badminton (Year 7/8). Three other bronze medals were achieved in the Boys Hockey and Girls Netball (Year 9/10), and Girls Football (Year 7/8).
Eastleigh was also awarded the prestigious Fair Play Award for their consistently good conduct, demonstrated at all matches and in all sporting disciplines throughout the day.
The Eastleigh team joined 2,000 children from across Hampshire. Eastleigh entered nine sporting disciplines including, athletics, tag rugby, tennis, hockey, netball, basketball, girls football, badminton and squash.
James Coney, Sports Development Officer for Eastleigh Borough Council said; "This year we entered the largest number of teams into the Hampshire Youth Games and achieved even more medal success. The Fair Play Award was a real credit to Eastleigh's performance. I am so pleased that all the kids really enjoyed this sporting festival and I would like to thank Southampton Airport for being our sponsors."
The team represented schools and clubs from across the borough including; Toynbee, Crestwood, Wyvern, Alderman Quilley, Fair Oak Squash Club, Swan Netball Club, Eastleigh Rugby Club, Eastleigh District Junior Athletics Club and Thorden Tennis Club.
Jan Halliday, spokeswoman for Southampton Airport, commented: "Congratulations to everyone in the Eastleigh team. We're delighted that our own local team had such a successful and enjoyable day."
