PUBS across the county will be packed with punters to cheer on England in the Euro 2004 quarter final clash with Portugal. But there will be divided loyalties at one venue - Portuguese restaurant Linda Maderia.
Owner Helder Baptista has been bringing in a portable TV for her soccer-mad waiters to keep tabs on her home country's progress so far. While the Southampton has become a mass of St George's flags during the tournament, the 25-year- old has proudly pinned the Portuguese flag in the window of his outlet in Bedford Place.
Helder, who moved to England eight years ago, said: "It's the only Portuguese flag I've seen around but I'll probably get a St George's flag as well for the game.
"It will be a strange game for me as although I'll obviously support Portugal I like England too as I've lived here for so long.
"I really didn't want England to end up playing Portugal though. I didn't even think we'd qualify for the quarter-finals after the way we started.
"But I think this will be a really good match and I actually think England will win. To be honest I'd be happy if either teams win.
Elsewhere pubs are preparing for a big night. The Walkabout in Southampton has been filled to capacity for every England game of the tournament so far.
It was already full by late afternoon for the opening game on a Sunday evening with France. Assistant manager Andrew Needham said: "We're expecting another sell-out. It should be an amazing atmosphere and everyone is looking forward to it. It's the second big England game. We always make sure we have enough supplies to cope."
