WEST END's Jon Barnes netted a brace of top-five placings in the Powertrain Caterham R400 Challenge on Sunday when he tackled the championship's seventh and eighth rounds at Castle Combe.
The 20-year-old qualified his PremierRoadandTrack.com-backed car on the front row of the grid and took a starring role in both races, taking his turn to lead each of them. But Barnes was delayed on the penultimate lap of the sprint race, when he was forced to take action to avoid an incident, and came home fifth.
In the feature race he improved to fourth and would have finished higher but for handling problems in the later stages.
Matt Blyth, who is sponsored by Southampton engineering firm Tricool, scored 11th and eighth places.
Newmarket's Luke Stevens, who has finished in the top three five times this season, leads the championship battle by five points from Barnes.
Barnes came into the event on the back of two second places at Oschersleben which promoted him to overall leader of the EuroCup series.
