THE annual Hampshire Youth Games were voted a great success at the weekend.

Around 1,400 youngsters aged between 11 and 16 converged on Aldershot's Army Barracks on Saturday for the event sponsored by Partners Against Railway Crime.

The Hampshire County Council organised event, in conjunction with local authorities and Sport England, offer a range of sports including football, athletics, tennis, rugby, hockey, basketball, squash, netball and table tennis.

For many of the youngsters it was their first experience of competitive sport.

Organiser Helen Mitchell said: "The idea is that the young people come along, hopefully enjoy it and have fun, and want to continue playing sport afterwards.

"We want them to go away and join a local club, and many of them will.

"We want them all to enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle and playing sport will help them do just that."

The second Hampshire Parallel Games for youngsters with learning or physical disabilities was held at Aldershot on Friday, and over 400 kids - almost double the number that attended the 2003 event - took part.
