Eastleigh have not ruled themselves out of the chase for Winchester City's goal-happy striker Andy Forbes.
Despite fevered speculation that Nationwide League side Yeovil Town and AFC Bournemouth are in the hunt along with Conference outfits Forest Green Rovers, Farnborough Town and Exeter City, Eastleigh manager Paul Doswell said: "As I understand it, we're still in with a decent shout."
Eastleigh, who have been promoted to the Isthmian Premier Division, were the first club to make Winchester a concrete offer for their £30,000-rated striker, who scored a phenomenal 76 goals for the FA Vase winners last season.
Doswell held talks with Forbes, pictured left, and his Winchester City teammate/ adviser Mark Blake on Wednesday and is expecting an answer this weekend.
"After all the speculation there's been about Forbes, no one seems to think Eastleigh are in the running, but I think that maybe we are," said Doswell.
Eastleigh are also interested in Winchester's want-away skipper/midfielder Danny Smith, but Doswell will wait for the Forbes situation to be resolved before making his move.
