WHILE figures produced by banks and building societies have shown a huge surge in house prices across the UK the picture in Wiltshire and Hampshire has been more mixed in the past year, according to official figures produced by the Land Registry.

During the first quarter of 2004 the average price of a house in Test Valley was down by 2.1 per cent although over the year ended March 2004 prices are up by 10.6 per cent.

Figures for the Basingstoke and Deane borough area show an average price rise of 5.8 per cent in the year ended March 2004 with a modest increase of 0.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2004.

The average house price in Andover was £216,662 at the end of March compared to £207,810 in Basingstoke - the least expensive part of Hampshire is Gosport where the average price was £140,601.

In the first quarter of the year average house prices in the Kennet area of Wiltshire fell by 5.7 per cent and were slightly lower over the year as a whole.

The highest rises in the past year have been in Blaenau Gwent in South Wales where prices are up by 47 per cent and the Isle of Bute where they have increased by 52.7 per cent.
