TWO Waterside Table Tennis Club youngsters came so close to netting a title in the English National Under-12 and 13 Championships.
David McBeath and Matthew Ware comfortably won their way through to the group stage of the Under-13s at Norfolk.
McBeath eventually lost out to talented Wing Yung Chan in the last 16 stage in an exciting clash.
Ware though went on to beat Will Maybanks, the number four seed, before seeing off the challenge of seventh favourite Chris Smith in the quater-finals.
Ware took on his clubmate's victor in the semi-final and, after an even start, disposed of Yung Chan 11-5 to give himself a shot at number one seed Gavin Evans. The match proved to be the best of the tournament but Ware was eventually forced to settle for second best.
McBeath took his turn to shine the following day in the under-12 competition.
His battling qualities got him into the final but once again Gavin Evans stood in the way of a Waterside win.
The Nottingham youngster was given a tough test but had enough in reserve to claim a second title.
