SYDENHAMS Wessex League outfit Fareham Town look like hanging on to top scorer Jamie Musselwhite for another season.

Although there was a rift between club and player following the War Memorial Charity Cup final against Gosport Borough in early May, the widely-admired striker, right, confirmed this week: "As things stand I'm staying with Fareham."

Several clubs, including Conference South new boys Bognor Regis Town and FA Vase winners Winchester City, having been keeping tabs on Musselwhite.

And ex-Bashley boss John Robson tried to sign him for the Foresters last term.

After netting goals galore for Hamble ASSC in his Wessex League baptism, the youngster from Farlington, Portsmouth, struck 28 times for Jon Gittens' Fareham last season and would almost certainly have got more but for a lengthy injury lay-off.

Musselwhite admits there was a falling out with the Hampshire Senior Cup finalists at the end of last season, but described it as nothing more than "a bit of a misunderstanding."

He explained: "A couple of things were said after the last game of the season against Gosport which I didn't agree with and I was considering leaving because I wasn't too happy. But it has all been resolved since then and I'm staying with Fareham.

"I've heard rumours about clubs being interested in me and Bognor have invited me for pre-season training, but no firm offers have come along.

"I've made the decision to work hard for Fareham and see what happens. I feel I've made progress in my year there and I've still got a lot of learning to do."

Goalscoring runs in the Musselwhite family. Dad Bob was a prolific striker for Bognor, Fareham and Newport IoW in his hey-day and Jamie's younger brother, Luke, picked up the youth team 'golden boot' award for Hamble ASSC.
