Sir.-With reference to my recent letter about a possible statue on the Thornycroft roundabout, and the subsequent letter from Frances Hughes, I agree with the lady in calling for better publicity about what is inside Milestones.
But let us remember Thornycroft as it should be remembered - steeped in history. It was an employer of so many people, where many vehicles were manufactured but, sadly, no longer with us.
Let us have a statue or sculpture to bring this past history to the fore. The vehicles made by Thornycroft were for use in two world wars.
Regretfully, we no longer see the vehicles every day like we did up to the 1960s. However, some can still be seen, lovingly restored by proud owners, bringing such wonderful memories and also appreciative remarks from the younger generation at various displays.
One great Basingstoke gentleman would, I feel sure, be all for this idea to remember a famous firm, if he was still with us. The late Arthur Attwood was so knowledgeable of the company, and of Basingstoke itself.
