Engelbert Humperdinck, Mayflower Theatre,
THE 68-year-old, centre stage at the Mayflower, sang They Tried To Tell Us We're Too Young - and they loved it.
A packed audience - mainly female it has to be said - couldn't get close enough. As the notes of a stirring My Way finale faded, they edged nearer - for a touch, a wave or to hand the singer a bouquet.
Engelbert Humperdinck, it seems, still has what it takes. Tall, dark and
undeniably handsome, he retains those brooding sideburns and continues to radiate that enormous stage presence. But most surprising of all is the velvety voice which still resonates the power that made the man a star.
Engelbert is on a 20-night tour. Judging by Saturday's performance, he's giving them the ballads they still want - Am I That Easy To Forget?, The Last Waltz, Spanish Eyes. And it's going so well they're even talking of a new release - of Please Release Me!
