HUNDREDS of people are lining up to take part in a sponsored walk in memory of domestic violence victim Joanne Guy.

Organisers of the event, taking place at Netley's Royal Victoria Country Park next month, have been inundated with potential participants following a front page Daily Echo article.

The walk - which is being dubbed Jo's Big Beanie - will raise money for Southampton Women's Aid, a charity which works to help women and children break free from violent relationships.

As reported in the Daily Echo, bubbly Joanne died at the hands of her brutal boyfriend Gavin Henty in February 2003.

Henty, 24, who strangled her in the flat they shared in Eastleigh High Street, is currently serving a life sentence for her murder.

Joanne's family and friends have pledged to turn the tragedy into a drive to help other women break free from violent relationships.

The fundraising walk on Sunday, July 11 will be led by Joanne's mum, Sue Middleton, 54, who is determined to ensure something positive comes from her daughter's death.

Sue said: "Initially we thought we might get 200 people taking part, but it now looks as if it could be well in excess of that.

"It is all an unknown quantity at this stage but we have certainly had lots of interest.

"It is going to be a fun day; a stroll and get-together rather than anything energetic."

Walkers will be able to choose between three short strolls, including one suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs, or can choose to do all three, with a total distance of around four and a half miles.

Those who don't want to collect sponsorship can simply walk and make a donation.
