THE horror of modern warfare has been brought home to residents in Winchester following a meeting in the city of Amnesty International members.
The members heard a talk by an expert in modern conflicts who told how recent figures showed more and more civilians, rather than those in the military, were dying in wars around the world.
Chris Coles, of the Christian organisation the Eirene Centre of Fellowship (ECF), described to the audience how in the First World War, just 14 per cent of casualties were civilians.
By the Second World War that figure had risen to 67, but today roughly 90 per cent of people injured in current conflicts are civilians caught up in the violence.
Mr Coles was giving the lecture at the city's Milner Hall where he was helping to formally launch an appeal by the ECF, whose aim is to reduce the causes of armed conflict.
