For the first time, Winchester will be providing the backdrop for one of the Cancer Research UK Race for Life events.

Sunday, June 13th, will see hundreds of women and girls take part in a fund-raising run, jog or walk to help beat cancer.

In the last decade, the series of women-only 5km runs has inspired thousands of women to put their best feet forward and raise over £50m for Cancer Research UK.

The money raised goes towards investigating treatment, cure and prevention of cancers affecting women.

In this, the 11th year of Race for Life, more than 325,000 women will take part in 150 events around the country in a bid to raise a further £20m.

The Winchester race will take place at North Walls Recreation Ground with a one-lap course - mainly on the flat. The 1,200 participants will be invited to start with an aerobic warm-up at 10.40am, before the race gets under way at 11am.

Winchester City Council's sport and recreation development officer, Louise Rowland, said: "These races have a strong following nationally and we are delighted that Winchester has been selected as a new venue for 2004.

"This is a great opportunity for people to take a little exercise on a summer day and help a good cause at the same time.

"My colleagues have already entered teams, which is a fun way to run. You can cheer each other on, dress up in silly outfits or let rip with a spot of friendly, inter-office rivalry."

Volunteers are also needed to help with practical organisation on the day.

Whether or not you have a wife or daughter participating, you can help to turn the day into a real family occasion by ringing 08705-134314 to offer your services.

Those who have not yet signed up to run, jog or walk are urged to enter the Race for Life by calling 08705-134314 or visiting www.raceforlife.org
