TWO girls have managed to thwart an attempted abduction in Lee-on-the Solent.

The girls, aged 11 and 12, had been walking along Cherque Way on the Cherque Farm estate when they were approached by a man near an alleyway leading into Grayson Close.

The man grabbed hold of their wrists but the girls pulled free and ran off.

He then headed off in the direction of Shoot Lane.

Although neighbours report not seeing or hearing anything at the time of the attempted abduction, it has left them shocked.

Resident Janet Bailey, of Grayson Close, near Fareham, said: "I've got two sons and you try to keep your eyes on them but it is difficult.

"You think your children are safe but it's made us more aware."

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, added: "It's awful when you hear of things like this happening on your own doorstep."

Detectives investigating the incident, which took place about 4.30pm on Monday, arrested a man in connection with the incident but he was subsequently bailed pending further enquiries.

They have issued a description of a man seen in the area at the time, who they would like to question.

He is described as white, middle-aged with white hair. He had a grubby appearance and was wearing a long black jacket and hat.

Det Con Mandy Gillan, leading the investigation, said: "I would like to speak to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area at the time, or saw a man running away from the area."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det Con Gillan at Gosport CID on 0845 045 4545 or contact the Crimestoppers number 0800 555 111.
