SALISBURY angler John Gray scored the biggest victory of his career winning the Stafford Moor Spring Festival.
Gray beat 100 of the south's best anglers, and teammate Dave Roper followed him home to land a tremendous success for local anglers.
Stafford Moor's owner Andy Seery - whose family used to own the Whiteacres Complex - has created the country's top match fishery from scratch in just four years and the festival results were incredible, with 21,000 pounds of fish, weighed in over the four days.
Gray collected £1,600 in prize money and prizes and went into the last day of the festival level on four penalty points with five other anglers after a section win on Woodpecker on day one with 154lb of carp to 10lb, another section win on day two on Tanners with 95lb 8oz of carp and a second place on day three with 71lb of carp from Pines.
Gray drew Joseph's on the last day knowing only a section win would be good enough and - fishing long pole and pellet up in the water - took 123lb of carp to 6lb to win his section and grab victory and his bumper payday.
Roper also won his section on the last day and finished with five penalty points to tie with Gray but lost out on a weight countback over the four days.
But he wasn't complaining after collecting £1,200 in prize money for his outstanding performance.
Roper also teamed up with Gray to win the pairs match on the rest day, when Roper took 156lb of carp from Woodpecker while Gray had 84lb of carp from Joseph's. Gray stayed on to fish the open on Sunday and finished a great week by finishing third with 89lb of carp from Tanners.
Conditions for the festival were far from ideal and Stafford Moors' match results will create shockwaves this summer in the match-fishing world when the venue hits top form.
