PUBLIC nudity campaigner Steve Gough arrived at court in typical fashion yesterday - and was promptly arrested before his trial could start.

Officers detained the 45-year-old for refusing to cover up after turning up at the building in just sandals and sunglasses, carrying a haversack on his back.

His case, which began in his absence, was later dropped when the prosecution withdrew, as Gough faces a crown court appearance on a different charge.

He will not dispute that he appeared nude in public, but is set to argue that it is his right as a human being to walk naked.

Gough had walked to Southampton Magistrates' Court from his home in Chamberlayne Road in Eastleigh to face a public order charge after riding his bike in the nude in the town last year.

After being refused entry to the building yesterday, he donned a red T-shirt in a bid to be allowed through - but was again turned away.

He then soaked up the sunshine outside the court for about 20 minutes before police arrested him and drove him to Southampton Central police station. His trial had been due to go ahead without him, but was stalled when the court was told a police officer involved in the case would not be able to attend.

Prosecutors then decided to withdraw the case because Gough faces a similar charge at Southampton Crown Court later this year.

HGV driver Gough said before his arrest yesterday: "If I arrived dressed, it would almost be as if I agreed with the charge."

He was last night in police custody awaiting bail.
