FOUR girls from Basingstoke Chess Club helped England West to a 20-18 victory over England East in a big under-11 match at Streatham.
Competing against the best girls from all over England, the outcome was evenly balanced until Rachel Judd drew on board six to assure her team of victory.
Fellow Basingstoke player Zoe Geidelberg had the misfortune to come up against England players in her two matches and lost to both.
Abigail Wood won and lost from board five while Kempshott Junior School pupil Judd had already won before her vital draw.
Her sister, Catherine, won both her matches on board nine. Further success came to the Basingstoke club at the English County Girls Chess Federation event at New Malden.
Geidelberg, Rachel and Catherine Judd and Bria Hutchings formed the Hampshire team who won gold in the under-11 section with 13 wins out of a possible 16.
