A HUGE electronic survey on the proposed national identity card is being conducted by MP John Denham.
Residents in Southampton are being urged to say if they agree or disagree with the controversial cards by clicking on to the Labour backbencher's website www.johndenham.labour.co.uk.
Home Secretary David Blunkett recently published proposals to introduce an ID card, containing information on a person's fingerprints and an iris scan.
Ministers claim the cards will tackle immigration abuse, prevent exploitation of health and welfare services, flush out terrorists and crack down on fraud.
Opponents claim the cards will infringe civil liberties by allowing the government to store too much personal information.
Southampton Itchen MP Mr Denham said: "In principle, I think these cards will help tackle the problems that people are concerned about. But I want to hear how those people I represent feel and the website is a good way of gathering opinions.''
