JUST five seasons into existence and Trojans Ladies rugby team are going for an unprecedented domestic treble when they tackle Loughborough Students in the National Challenge Shield final on Sunday.
Having already picked up the Division Two South crown, along with the Shield (South) medals by defeating Redruth Albany 14-5 a month ago, the Stoneham Lane girls travel to Broadstreet near Coventry hopeful of crowning this most memorable of seasons.
Loughborough, made up mainly of freshers and thought not to be much related to the side triumphant in the BUSA final viewed by their opponents recently, play an equivalent league lower than Trojans and finished mid-table.
Neil Joisce's side are therefore likely to be the favourites, despite Loughborough's thumping 62-0 victory over Colne and Nelson in the North Shield final, especially as they go with a full strength side only missing two key players.
Second row Ang May and scrum-half Alex Kehoe are the only players absent for the clash. The former has a spiral hand fracture while the number nine is in Canada with coach husband Jason.
"We can't read anything into their league position," the coach urged his side to consider. "While we don't think we are going into the game as second favourites, we know opposition that we have beaten have beaten sides that have beaten them.
"They have given us a bit of an insight into them and I know that we can win. My side has the ability to beat any side on their day, if they wish. There is a chance this season to have a season like no other.
"However, the nerves are starting to show!"
Some 50 spectators will be making the trip to the Midlands in support for the 12.30pm kick-off and Joisce is hoping more will make the short two-hour journey. "Anyone wanting to come and cheer us on is welcome," he added.
"For players like Bev Forrow, Mandy Baverstock, Kirsty Ward and Karen Adams, there are unlikely to see days like this again - and the team really want to do it for them."
Team: Sally Thompson, Laura Collins, Bev Forrow, Sarah Conlon, Nicki Stevens, Sally Greenway, Mandy Baverstock; Helena Ventham, Vicki Bolton, Tess McHugh, Jenny Bethwaite, Sally Hunt, Tina Simpson, Jade Scott, Kirsty Ward. Reps: Sarah Pynn, Karen Adams, Nic Boardman, Dawn Seymour, Jackie Westbury, Cat Brown.
