SOUTHAMPTON'S Andy Morgan-Lee virtually all the way to win the Netley 10k on Sunday.
It was the 19th running of the race, at Victoria Country Park, Netley, and it produced a large field on a near perfect early summer's day.
Despite overlooking The Solent and Southampton Water, the course enjoyed a relatively breeze-free morning, which encouraged some better-than-expected finishing times.
A field of just under 400 runners headed off on the three-lap course inside the Park but it was not long before Morgan Lee was trading strides at the front with Bournemouth's Mark Hargreaves.
By the five-kilometre mark, Morgan Lee had pulled away and he won by 90 seconds in the end, in a time of 31min 36sec from Hargreaves, who took the leading veteran prize in 33.07.
The pair were chased home by a group of four Stubbington Green men who made sure of the team trophy.
The ladies' race was far less well defined, but veteran lady Cath Wheeler from Overton managed to outlast the other contenders to take that prize back to mid-Hampshire.
The day proved very popular with the casual runners, since they outnumbered the club element in an event that encouraged complete family involvement and offered a full road race away from the main roads of Southampton.
