TO hundreds of spellbound spectators it could have been the real thing.
But this Bugatti Type 59 is a painstakingly built copy of the expensive original.
With a price tag of £14,250, it is the nearest most of us will ever get to the 1934 classic car.
Retired British Aerospace engineer Peter Brown, pictured, displayed the replica among hundreds of vintage vehicles at the Beaulieu's annual Spring MotorMart Autojumble.
The 75-year-old grandfather from Milford-on-Sea said: "My sons went to university and left me a back garden load of rubbish left over from two MGB cars.
"I got the details and drew the designs by measuring the Bugatti they have at Beaulieu Motor Museum.
He added: "I can't afford a real one so I thought I would build one instead."
Weekend attendance was expected to top 13,000 visitors.
