IF it ain't broke don't fix it - a saying that, judging by these pictures, doesn't translate very well into German.
Not content with selling arguably the most beautiful incarnation of the iconic Porsche 911 supercar, Stuttgart engineers have been tasked with taking the knife to the all-conquering model.
Released this week, these are the first official pictures of the firm's new 911 - the Type 997.
The design cues are subtle, and the changes slight, but Porsche believes it's done enough to keep the latest Autobahn tornado at the top of its game.
The manufacturer says it has given the recognisable features of the coup "new energy", but that the changes under the skin are the most significant. It claims the new 911 (pictured) now has increased efficiency, safety and - if it's possible - added even more driver enjoyment.
The first models to hit our shores will be the base 911 Carrera and the slightly more powerful S version.
The entry-level machine packs a 3.6-litre, 325bhp, six-cylinder, boxer engine while the Carrera S features a newly-developed 3.8-litre power-plant, which pumps out a healthy 355bhp.
The S model accelerates from 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds while the Carrera achieves the same dash in exactly 4.8secs. On a test track the Carrera will top out at 177mph, while the slightly more potent S will reached 182 mph.
Both machines have a newly-developed six-speed manual gearbox and revised chassis dynamics, which include active suspension, called Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM).
In the "normal" setting, PASM provides a sporty and comfortable balance to the ride. Engaging "sport" firms things up for increased agility.
A further option for both models is a sports suspension package, which lowers the body by 20mm, offered in combination with a limited-slip differential.
Porsche add that the result of the new exterior design - which includes a wider track and more emphasis on the waist - is a 911 which is even more dynamic, clear, powerful and elegant.
Other features of the new motor include revised circular headlamps, which hark back to the '60s original, more prominent front and rear bumpers and wheelarches, styled wing mirrors and a more aerodynamic rear spoiler. The interior is tailored in leather as standard.
Prices for the 911 Carrera is £58,380 and £65,000 for the 911 Carrera S, but if you have to ask...
