D-DAY: During the weekend of June 4 to 7, the village will be represented at the 60th anniversary of the D-Day Landings.
This will be well publicised on TV and in the newspapers, so it would be nice to know where our legion band is figuring in the celebrations.
Twenty-five members of the band and 16 committee members and guests will be leaving Portsmouth on Friday, June 4, heading for their base, Hotel Regina in Liseux.
They have registered their interests in the Normandy Veterans Association Parade at Coleville on June 5. That evening they will be at the British Garden of Remembrance at 5pm.
At 11am, on June 6, they will be at the Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery, Bayeux, playing after the service.
Then, perhaps their biggest honour, they have been invited by Madame Arlette Gondree to play at the much-renowned Pegasus Bridge during the evening.
After this, they have two tasks. One is to play off a team of London police officers, who are walking to raise funds for the legion, and the other is in Liseux.
The total cost of this marathon is £6,970, with the band paying half. The rest is from donations from organisations and people of the area.
They would like to thank all who have supported them. By the same token, we wish them well in bringing the name of Old Basing to the forefront of the celebrations.
TOMORROW: Spring fayre outside the new Tesco Express at the Lychpit Centre from 1pm.
There is also a plant sale at the Legion Hall in Crown Lane from 10am to 11.30am.
